Delivery Kits

Women waiting at clinic

In February 2016, TPP provided the Makuyuni Dispensary with ten delivery kits, educational materials, stereoscopes, and blood pressure cuffs to help educate and attend to pregnant women. Over the next six months, ten Naitolia women in their last trimester agreed to participate in the delivery kit program. The program aimed to:

  1. Increase use of the clinic for prenatal care, labor, and delivery
  2. Decrease incidence of post-partum and post-natal infection
  3. Increase TBAs' knowledge of the impact of sanitation and hygiene on maternal and newborn health

Seven participants completed the study. Five participants completed all four recommended prenatal visits and two completed three visits. Three participants delivered at a local clinic. The four participants could not travel to the clinic because the delivery was too hurried, they had no transport, or their husband was away. No labor or delivery related post-partum infections were reported for either the participant or their newborn. A follow-up survey with the five participating traditional birth attendants revealed that they did use the kits while assisting a participant to deliver at home.
